Bert Henman was in a dilemma: he badly wanted to send men back to help Ardal track down and kill the men who had ruthlessly murdered two families in his care. But having lost his chief scout and seven other men, it had left him short of hands and he had too many other people to look out for.

He sat atop his horse as the train slowly trundled past, then fate intervened. Kate was sitting on the next wagon. She turned her head and stared at Bert.

The message in her eyes was plain to see.

As she passed, her head turned slowly to keep Bert fixed with her eyes.

Bert knew then what he must do.

‘OK, Jess. I’ll allow two men to ride with you. But I’ll pick ’em.’

‘Sure thing boss,’ Jess swallowed hard.

‘I don’t want no risk takin’,’ Bert added. ‘You find Ardal, and you listen to him. What he decides to do, whether it’s to track them scum down or ride back here, you follow! Got it?’

‘Yes, sir.’

‘OK. Go get me Bill and Rob.’

Jess wheeled his mount and rode to the head of the train. Within thirty minutes he returned with two outriders.

Bert Henman was staring into the sky, eastwards. ‘Buzzards,’ he muttered.

‘Wanted us, boss?’

Bert turned to face the three men.

‘Sure did, you just volunteered.’

‘Fer what?’

Bert explained exactly what he wanted.

The two men didn’t hesitate in their willingness to agree to go, especially when Bert mentioned a bonus!

‘Go see Jack at the chuck wagon, grub up and get some ammo.’

The three men rode down the trail to find the chuck wagon, and Bert spurred his horse forwards to catch up to Kate’s wagon and tell her what he’d decided.

He could see the expression on her face as she smiled, her gratitude obvious.

‘I know Ardal will do what’s best,’ she said simply.

‘I’m sure he will, ma’am. If’n there’s anything you and the children need, you jus’ see me, OK?’

‘Thank you Mr Henman.’

‘It’s Bert, Mrs Maloney.’

‘It’s Kate, Bert,’ Kate smiled.

‘Kate,’ Bert tipped his hat and set off to the front of the train.
